School Visits/Teacher In-service/Presentations
One of the perks of being a teacher is interacting with young people of all ages. Now that I have retired, I look forward to the chance to visit schools and work directly with students. Having taught music, library, English, and creative writing, I am very comfortable in the classroom. I offer the following programs individually or in combination and would be happy to talk about any special request you may have.
Bristol Bay Summer Presentations
I usually begin with a reading from the book and a discussion of the issues it raises, divorce, family, building confidence, living in remote Alaska, and working the kinds of hard, physical jobs that are common there. The discussion expands to what it means to be an artist and, depending on the teacher’s preference, to some of the difficult questions raised by the proposed Pebble Mine near Bristol Bay. The session also includes a slide show of Bristol Bay and surrounding areas, the story of the true-life adventures that led me to write Bristol Bay Summer, and examples of the writing process. Sessions run approximately 45 – 60 minutes. (Limit 3 per day.)
Studying creative writing is a valuable activity. It not only improves writing skills, but provides a safe vehicle for self-expression and for tapping one’s imagination. I am available to teach creative writing workshops with the assistance of one classroom teacher per classroom. Sessions for younger students run 45 minutes and for older students, one hour. If there is a particular skill your class needs extra help with, please let me know, and I will tailor the session to that special need.
Reader’s Theaters are great fun and effective teaching tools. Choose from any of the Reader’s Theaters in Our Ancestor’s Stories: Reader’s Theater Adaptations from the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. Sessions can be either a one – two hour teacher in-service that includes a quick overview of how the process works and a mini-performance, or we can schedule a multi-day residency where I work with a teacher in the classroom to prepare students for a full-scale performance. If you think you may be interested, let’s talk about what would work best for you.
$250 per 50-minute session, minimum three sessions
Transportation and lodging are extra. I understand traveling to and from Alaska is expensive. I am happy to try to help you coordinate booking with other nearby schools to offset travel expenses. Check availability here.
